What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a very pleasant, relaxed state of mind, occurring naturally throughout our
daily lives eg. while reading a book or listening to music. The student
who gazes dreamily out the window oblivious to the calls of the teacher,
is an example of somebody experiencing an everyday mini-trance.
In hypnotic trance, the person engages in
subconscious mind activity, accessing their experiences, memories and emotions. As
subconscious mind activity increases, naturally there is a decreasing interest in
conscious, analytical thinking and so the person becomes a little dissociated from
external sounds and stimuli. Contrary to popular misconceptions about hypnosis, the
hypnotised person enters into trance of their own will and is neither asleep nor
unconscious, merely drifting pleasantly in inner sensations.
Hypnosis as a therapeutic tool
Hypnosis provides the ideal environment for working with the 'psyche'. Mentally and emotionally,
hypnosis can bring about a greater awareness of internal feelings, thoughts, sensations in the subconscious mind.
The benefit of this heightened awareness is a greater insight into self, more clarity, less confusion.
